Golden Retrievers are powerful, active dogs that should be sound and well balanced. They possess a personality that is eager, alert and self-confident. Bred to be hunting dogs, they are nowadays also make good pets and family companions fitting into any family as they are neither lazy nor are they hyperactive. The breed belongs to the group of gundog.

The Golden Retrievers are good with children and are very playful. The Golden Retrievers love to swim and require a lot of training. These dogs prefer people's company to any other type, although they will adapt well to a kennel environment.

Height: These are strong animals standing about 23-24 inches (58-61 cm) at the shoulders.
Weight: The dogs weigh about 65-75 lb (29.5-34 kg). Females are naturally smaller than the males.

Golden Retrievers Photos - Coloring

Earlier the coloring of these dogs was ranging from medium gold to dark gold to a "copper" gold. With the time passed the lighter colors emerged. Today Golden Retrievers range from cream to dark gold with the lighter colors seemingly more preferred by many than the darker colors of the original Golden Retrievers.

The coat requires regular brushing and bathing when it is necessary. Golden Retrievers shed a fair amount and, therefore, they need weekly grooming with a firm bristle brush or comb.

The Golden Retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia and congenital eye defects. OFA and CERF certification are important from both parents when taking a puppy. There also skin allergies are common in these dogs. Puppies' parents should be checked for Von Willebrand's disease and heart problems.

These dogs are very good for apartment life if they receive sufficient exercise. They are moderately active indoors and they will do best with at least a medium to large yard. As they are natural born hunters, these dogs require a lot of training and exercises out of doors. If the Golden Retrievers are not well exercised, and are overfed, they tend to put on weight quickly.
