The name of this first dog was Nous and he is the founder of the Golden Retriever breed. The breeding process lasted for a quarter of a century until the desired dog appeared. The breed was registered as a distinct one by the Kennel Club as a distinct breed in 1913. That year, a club dedicated to this breed, was founded.

They say that the following breeds were included into the breed that we know today. They are the following: the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, the Newfoundland, the Irish Setter and a variety of water spaniels. Later countries all over the world imported the breed whereby it was, and is, admired and loved. The aim of the breeding was to develop a dog with a loyal and kind character, yet spirited and energetic, with a love for the water and an ability to retrieve.

Golden Retrievers - Golden Retrievers' origin is clear from careful records made during the process of breeding. It appeared in England in the middle of the 19th century due to deliberate crossing of a yellow wavy coated retriever and a Tweed water spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth aimed at breeding a dog that could be able to swim in cold water, have a keen sense of smell and retrieve game without damaging it. The AKC registered the Golden or Yellow Retriever in 1927. Since that time the Golden became known as a great sporting dog, guide dog and a pet. In 2001, it was the second most popular breed after the Labrador Retriever according to the AKC.

The Golden is a sporting dog bred and trained to retrieve game. Its water-resistant coat allows the dog to swim in very cold water. An athletic build presupposes a hard-working dog.
